New Lithium Plays

1 09 2009

With lithium ion batteries being the preferred manner of powering electric and hybrid electric vehicles, lithium is an increasingly important metal. It’s hot. Period.

At present the main producer of lithium for brine and concentrates are Argentina, Chile and Australia producing 82% of total lithium production in 2008. China is a growing producer and last year produced 8% of lithium production. New lithium plays are likely to emerge in the coming years.

Linear Minerals in Canada has resumed exploration at its Seymour Lake lithium, tantalum and beryllium property in the north of Ontario. Exploration apparently returned “exciting lithium grades”. A drilling program should be initiated shortly. The property is accessible by road which is an important advantage especially as some areas of Canada can be remote. Other lithium projects include Lithium One’s James Bay lithium project in the province of Quebec.

It would be a very strategic move for Canada to invest in lithium production capacity as many automotive [parts] firms are currently fighting over electric battery market share. For example:

Samsung-Bosch JV to invest $409M in battery plant

SEOUL (Reuters) — SB LiMotive, a joint venture between Germany’s Robert Bosch GmbH and South Korea’s Samsung SDI Co., plans to invest 500 billion won ($409.2 million) in an electric vehicle battery plant by 2015.

SB LiMotive also aims to win a 30 percent share in the global auto battery market by 2015, it said in a statement on Thursday.

Its plant, to be built in Ulsan, South Korea, will produce batteries for hybrid and pure electric vehicles starting in 2011.

SB LiMotive will have some local competition for that market share. South Korea’s Hyundai Mobis Co., the car-parts making unit of Hyundai Motor group, plans to set up a battery joint venture with LG Chem Ltd, the country’s No. 1 chemicals company, to develop and produce lithium-ion battery packs for hybrid cars.
